Esper Warns US-Iran War Could Drag Into 2027

Former U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper has warned that the conflict between the United States and Iran could continue well into 2027, potentially diverting Washington’s attention from China’s growing global influence.

Speaking at the LSEG and Eurasia Group’s GZERO Summit in London on Thursday, Esper said the conflict could persist for years, raising the possibility that it could extend into the next U.S. administration.

Key Concerns:

  • Prolonged Conflict: A lengthy war could increase military spending and place additional pressure on U.S. resources.
  • China’s Rising Influence: Washington’s focus on the Middle East could limit its ability to respond to China’s expanding economic, technological and military power.
  • Strategic Challenges: Sustained military engagement could complicate U.S. efforts to maintain its influence across the Indo-Pacific region.

A prolonged conflict could also create uncertainty for global energy markets, particularly if tensions threaten oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

Esper’s remarks highlight the broader strategic risks of a prolonged Middle East conflict. However, his assessment that the war could continue into 2027 is a warning, not a confirmed forecast.
